People who compare this to The Sims don't know what they're talking about, frankly it's a completely different experience. In addition, I think an MMORPG is the perfect medium for sandbox activities like crafting, performing and building houses, because you can share the experience with others, and your progress remains in the world for years, potentially.
That's what Knights of the Old Republic was good at. I play MMORPGs for socialization and interesting, complex gameplay, not to feel like Luke Skywalker. On a related note, I don't think MMORPGs are a proper medium for true "action and adventure" in the first place. Some European board games scratch a very similar itch, though.
